German rower Oliver Zeidler originally came to prominence in indoor rowing when he won the World Games in Wroclaw in 2017 with a time of 5:42.0 in his first ever indoor race. His rowing career has gone from strength to strength since that first indoor race. On the water, he competed in the Tokyo Olympics, and is the current reigning World Champion in the Men’s Single Sculls. The 2023 World Indoor Rowing Championships in Mississauga, Toronto, February 25–26, sees him return to the world indoor stage for the first time since 2017, so we took the opportunity to sit down with him for a quick chat. This year’s World Rowing Indoor Championships was definitely one for the books. World Rowing and their partners put on a truly impressive event, incorporating a live race tracker, live video from many of the athletes plus commentators from the UK, Australia and the US, all of which helped to create a live event feel. In total, 763 athletes from 63 different countries raced over three days, all online from the comfort of their own home or gym (if racing 2000 meters can ever be described as comfortable!). It is a natural time to examine things like technique and training plans--what worked, what did not, and how you can make changes. For a range of what works during this transition, I checked in with a few indoor stalwarts who medaled at the 2019 World Rowing Indoor Championships in Long Beach, California, USA.
